Cybercrime increases…The battle is on :)

Howzit going guys :) I can tell you that things aren’t so wonderful this year with regard to computer security.

What I mean is that according to various stats and computer security news sites which I have been reading, it has come to my attention that cybercrime is just increasing.

The battle goes on, the cybercriminals are going mad trying to work their way around the computer security software and computer security gurus. Then on the other hand you have the computer security software makers as well as the computer security gurus themselves, working like complete and utter maniacs all with the sole purpose of beating the cybercriminals. It is just an endless battle and only time will tell who will actually win.

The question that arise is what is going to happen on a futuristic level with regard to cybercrime and computer security? This is a fascinating question….even if I do say so myself and hopefully some answers will come into existance fairly shortly.

All in all the let the battle continue the cyberbattle :) woo hoooo bring it on :)

I quote one of my best quotes of all time which is:”I personally like to think of the Internet as a parallel universe, a cyber-world as opposed to the real-world. In cyber-world people do much the same thing as in the real-world, such as chat, work, or go shopping. And, as in the real-world, there are dangers. In the real-world, we spend years as children learning about the world and all its dangers before we can safely go out on our own. This is not the case in cyber-world. People wander into cyber-world as cyber-toddlers or even cyber-infants. How can these people be expected to look after themselves in this strange new world? … I believe that education must be the first step to computer security. . Cyber-world is too complex and dangerous to jump into without understanding the dangers.”

Latest Greivance to Complain About! Rootkits :-(

I thought trojans and viruses were bad enough but Ugh now there is something else I need to watch out for. I was just reading this rootkit thread on a friend of mine’s blog about rootkits. These things are scary! And a lot of anti-virus software cannot effectively detect rootkits.

Anyway there is a free program put out by Microsoft to detect them called Rootkit Revealer. I am going to download it now and see if it finds any on my machine. Here is a screenshot:

Do You Suffer From Internet Addiction?

Do You Suffer From Internet Addiction?

If you thought meetings were only for drug addicts and alcoholics, think again. The twelve steps which are used for alcoholics in AA and for drug addicts in NA are now been used to treat people with Internet Addiction. Internet Addiction has recently been recognised as a disorder by none other than the American Psychological Association. According to The Centre for Internet Addiction in Pennslyvania, Internet Addiction has actually become a huge issue in divorce and employment cases worldwide. It does not matter what you are doing online the factor is if you have an Internet Addiction you will spend continuous amounts of time online.

The question that may be asked are what are the symptoms of Internet Addiction? One of the main symptoms of Internet addiction is spending excessive amounts of time on the internet as opposed to engaging in other activities. Symptoms of Internet Addiction disorder include lack of sleep, bad performance at university or school or poor job performance as well as apathy. If you are lying about the amount of time you spent online and you do this continuously while secretly spending hours of time online when you are meant to be doing other things, then this may be a symptom of Internet Addiction. If you are irritated and continuously frustrated when you are offline then you may be suffering from Internet Addiction. If your social relationships and recreational activities are suffering due to spending time online then chances are that you have an Internet Addiction.

It is interesting to know that some psychologists do not believe and support the idea of Internet Addiction. They rather support the idea of addiction to the stimulation provided by the internet. In the world that we live in today so many people are reliant on the internet for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest industries which currently exists is the I.T industry. It is hardly uncommon today to walk into a beautiful modern home with all the latest material items and wonder how the home owner affords such exquisite luxuries. It is hardly surprising when the person turns around and answers the question to what they do and replies:”I am in I.T”. Being on the internet all day is a very common requirement for many jobs all over the world so it is difficult to distinguish between what constitutes an addiction to the internet and what constitutes an addiction for work. The person may be a workaholic as opposed to an Internet Addict.

Internet Addiction has not yet been added to the DSM.If it ever will remains a futuristic question. According to reliable statistics close to ten percent of internet users could potentially be suffering from an Internet Addiction. This specific addiction has been shown to cause extreme marital as well as work problems. It not that uncommon to hear stories of a man choosing the internet over his wife or a teenager choosing the internet over school. If you or a loved one suffer from an Internet Addiction it may be a good idea to sort it out as if you don’t, you run the risk of spending so much time living in the virtual world that you don’t live much in the real world.

A man who has chosen to remain anonymous who is currently single and resides within New York City tends to spend on average sixteen hours on the internet every single day of his life. This particular individual happens to work with computers and spends all his time at work in front of a computer. He then proceeds to go home and goes straight back onto the computer as soon as he gets home. He basically spends most of his life awake in front of a computer as opposed to being in the world living it. There are treatment facilities and online therapists who are able to help you. If you are not sure if you are addicted to the internet then it may be a good idea to do a Google search and find one of the official tests you can take to see if you are an Internet Addict or not. Remember admitting that you have a problem is the first step.

Reasons Why Windows Is Not A Virus
1. Viruses are free.

2. Viruses don’t take up most of your hard drive.

3. Viruses don’t need 80 megs of RAM.

4. Viruses don’t have major bugs.

5. Viruses don’t have three different sets of documentation.

6. Viruses don’t leak info to the press about the upcoming Jerusalem 95, to keep people from switching to Michelangelo/2 Warp.

7. Viruses aren’t on every computer.

8. Nobody cares if a virus turns out to be 16 bit, even though it is advertised as 32…

9. Viruses install themselves !

I wonder about hackers…….

I wonder about hackers. I want to know what makes them tick and what drives them sooo hard. I want to know how code becomes their God and how they operate. I sit for hours on end puzzling over these revelations and wondering the truth. Why do they go to the lengths that they go to? Is it simply because they can or because they want to.

Are they challenging their minds or are they challenging the limitations of the online world? Are hackers that good at what they do or are lay people so uneducated with regard to hacking and coding that we are all just fooled?Do hackers idealise movies with code in and read books that take them to new mental heights?Who do they want to be and what do they set out to acheive?

I ask these questions to myself and wonder.I read up on stuff and do my own research. I also do whatever I can in order to seek the answers to my questions.
The truth of the matter is………I wonder about hackers……………

Security this season!

It has been claimed that security this season is something to look out for. Computer security experts are claiming that there may be problems. I don’t know what I think exactly but I have been doing alot of reading and research and am not sure exactly what I think. I do however know that computer security is going to get hectic in the new year. There are more and more users online and therefore more and more crimes. That is my thinking at least.

I wonder what is going to happen. I do know that hackers are taking the world by storm and this is going to be hacking holiday madness. Let the madness begin.
Hackers are meant to be going wild and having lots of fun. hackers are insane people and brilliant. They love to code and are able to do mad things. i sometimes wish that I were able to do what they can as it is soooooo cool to be able to be infront of a pc and just do whatever your heart desires. I mean you can make anything and everything happen. wow.Lets see what these holiday hackers will bring! holiday-hackers

Laptops and laptop security!

I love my laptop so much but I am concerned about theft. Laptop theft seems to be happening all the time. I am reading about ways of retrieving a stolen laptop and what you can actually do if your laptop is stolen. I am also reading about the different ways of tracing and tracking a laptop. I also am learning why people steal laptops.

Everyone needs to be careful because it is not just the laptop that can be stolen but the information on the laptop. Most people think about a stolen laptop as a simple concept that if it is stolen , you will simply not have a wonderful laptop and maybe your insurance company can replace it.

The truth is that there is so much information that can be stolen on your laptop. It is is insane. The other aspect that worries me is laptop batteries and them getting old and what to do? I found this:http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=234887 which answers the question well.

Laptops are great but you need to hold onto them tightly! laptops

Linux is NOT MY THING…maybe it is yours?

Linux, yuck! what is the point? I like the idea of having a selection of OS’s available to chose from. But I stick to my same things and I am happy with it. I also think open source in general is highly debatable. The strange thing is I usually in my encounters in day to day life , come across vast amounts of people but all of them can be classified as “either or” open source lovers or haters.

I LOVE WINDOWS it is my thing. I think it is extremely user friendly and easy to use and manage. Windows also gives you instant use and provides instant gratification as opposed to Linux which takes forever to learn how to use.

If you have an office and a linux administrator and all the pc’s happen to get changed over lets so , that is going to be a huge financial burden besides the factor that the guy is going to have to know what he is doing extremely well.

The amount of technical ability needed for Linux is just madness, it is so inconvenient and highly annoying.

Plus most hardware manufacturers will support their products in windows anyway thus making it better really :)

I don’t know there are just loads of disadvantages to linux, I mean I understand it is free and blardy blar but to me that kind of represents cheap ass open source junkies. I prefer to pay for quality any day.

Come on let it also be said if you take the average Linux user, what they going to do unless they have the knowledge and understand code , Windows help sections are wonderful and the support is great so rather pay :) Its all a matter of opinion I suppose in the end.

All I can say if I had to give  advice is  if you are crossing over,do it with care and caution.(You will need it.)

The windows vs Linux wars continues…………. BRING IT ON GUYS :) lets do it with full force….all the way!

Some Funky Google tricks that I wish to share!

These are some of my personal favourite and I would be happy to learn some more. I am always amped to learn as many Google Tricks as I can.

Check this out:This rocks!

1. Google Calculator
How this works is your type an equation into the search field and it will give you the result. Example: 2*4 – 23*5 + 1000. After you type this in and click search or enter it will give you the result. You can do addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/), to the power of (^), and square root of a number (sqrt).

2. Dictionary Definitions
You can get the definition of a word by typing “define:” followed by the word. Example: define: canucks. This will get you the definition of canucks.

3. Search for a specific title
Suppose you came across a website you thought was awesome but you forgot to bookmark the site and only remembered the title of it and wanted to find it again. Well you can search by title with Google to hopefully find that website a bit more easily. All you need to do is type “intitle: then the title”. By doing this you will only get results of websites with that line in the title.

4. Google Converter
This is a very useful one if you need to convert something from one unit to another unit quickly. All you need to do is type something like “5km in miles” and it will do the conversion for you. I also use it a lot for changing from Fahrenheit to Celsius (25F to C).

5. Compare Currencies
Google search engine has a built in currency converter so you can go from one currency to another. This is done by simply typing something like “1 USD in CAN” and press enter and it will do the conversion for you.

6. Weather Updates
If you want to know what the weather will be like in your area you can type something like “London weather” and it will give you the conditions in that area.

7. Search for specific file types
If you want to find a certain type of file on the Internet it is normally pretty difficult to find what you are looking for but with the use of Google search you can find file types a bit more easily. You can search for file types by doing something like “Guide to build a good website filetype: ppt”. That will look for files with that name and the file type of a powerpoint presentation.

8. Search on a particular website

If you want to search a particular website from Google you can do this by typing “hitch DVD site:example.com”. By typing in site: and then the website it will search that website for what you have type before site:.

9. Get the local time anywhere
Want to know the time in London now? You can do that by typing “what time is it London” in the search bar. You can also do it by typing “time (location)” without the quotes.

10. Remove unwanted search results
Have you ever wanted to search for something in particular but wanted to remove some of the search results? You can do this by type -something after the search term to remove it from the search results. Example: James Bond -movie. What that would do is remove the search results of James Bond that included the movie so you would find other things like news, books, etc.

11. Search for URLs
Want to search for a particular URL? You can do so by putting a “_, . , -” in between the words instead of a space. Example: What_are_you_talking_about. This would search for URLs that included those words.

12. Track Flight Status
Want to track a particular flight status? You can do that if you know the airline and flight number. You just need to type in the airline and the flight number to get the status. Example: British airways flight 5. This will bring you the results of this flight from this particular airline.

13. Search Google Groups by the subject line
You can search Google groups by subject line with this little trick. Type “insubject:then topic here” and you will get the Google groups with that subject line.

14. Find Related Sites
This trick will probably be familiar to a bunch of people but is helpful for finding related sites. What you do is type “related:example.com”. So if you wanted to find an alternative to the website your are looking at that you may have liked you can use this feature.

15. Find Links to a specific URL
This is pretty helpful for finding backlinks to your website. If you want to find out what websites link to your website you can type “link:example.com” and you will get all the results of the websites that link back to yours.
